The Power of Taking Time to Be Bored

Mar 27, 2023

I am writing this blog on a flight home from my home in the Dominican Republic. I often go there on solo work retreats that have become a vital part of my health and wellness, personally and professionally. On these retreats, the agenda is " Not much." I spend time in deep work and focus. I spend time working on my body and mind. Most of this time is spent alone.

We often think that being "bored" is a waste of time. But what if I told you that taking time to be bored can benefit your business, health, and life? That's right--bored. I purposely use this phrase that has confused me since I was a little girl, as I am sure I have never felt bored. However, I understand the concept, so I am using the word to challenge your thinking. Boredom is not only okay, but it can also be incredibly beneficial. Finding moments to enjoy a trip, a walk, or a nap without worrying about work or taking a few days off for self-care and allowing yourself some rest and relaxation can do wonders for your productivity and well-being.

First off, let's discuss the benefits of being bored. We can explore our creative sides when we allow ourselves to be idle and not worry about work. This means that when we return to business, we will have an influx of fresh ideas ready to be implemented. Furthermore, this type of creativity leads to innovative solutions that help propel our businesses forward.

In addition to unlocking creativity, being bored also helps us focus on essential things outside of work—like spending quality time with family or engaging in activities like meditation or exercise that allow us to recharge our mental and physical batteries. These activities help us stay balanced throughout the year, no matter how stressful things get in our business.

Finally, taking the occasional break is a great time to practice gratitude—something we don't always make time for when we are constantly on the go with other commitments. Taking this quiet time also allows you to reflect on all that has been accomplished while looking forward to new goals and challenges ahead with an open mind and heart.

Taking breaks from work may feel counterintuitive as a business owner or leader; however, it is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your work in the long run! You will unlock hidden creativity within yourself and give yourself some much-needed space from stressors while practicing mindfulness and gratitude to apply in everyday life.

On the last day of my trip, I was handed a challenge in the form of an email regarding a new issue with my former business partner. It was a valuable reminder of lessons learned and is now seen as an opportunity for personal growth! In accepting accountability for whatever part, I may have played in the situation, I'm bolstered by positivity - ready to learn these lessons and move on to higher vibrations. I am so grateful for the tools of success and mindfulness I have cultivated over the years.

Do you believe in yourself?

If you don’t have the confidence you’d like to have in yourself, then EARN IT. Do what you say you will do. TODAY. Time alone, doing nothing has helped me so much towards trust in myself.
